Septic tank emptying in Cornwall typically costs between £150 and £300, depending on the size of the tank, accessibility, and your location. Cesspit emptying may cost more due to larger volumes. Emergency or out-of-hours callouts may incur an additional charge. Always get a written quote before booking.
Most domestic septic tanks should be emptied every 6 to 12 months. A family of four with a standard 2,700-litre tank typically needs annual emptying. Larger households or smaller tanks may need more frequent service. If you notice slow drains or bad odours, it's probably overdue.
Watch out for: slow-draining sinks and toilets, gurgling sounds in the plumbing, unpleasant odours near the tank or drains, pooling water or soggy ground around the tank area, and sewage backing up into the property. If you spot any of these, book an emptying sharpish to avoid environmental damage or costly repairs.
You don't need a permit for emptying, but the waste must be disposed of by a licensed waste carrier registered with the Environment Agency. You can check any firm on the Environment Agency’s public register of waste carriers. Under the General Binding Rules (2020), your septic tank must also discharge to a drainage field — not directly to a watercourse.
A standard domestic septic tank emptying typically takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. Larger tanks or those with difficult access may take a bit longer. The specialist uses a tanker vehicle to pump out the waste, which is then transported to a licensed disposal facility.
Some local firms can empty a tank the same day when their schedule allows, but it isn’t guaranteed, especially in peak season. Ring two or three firms and say how urgent it is; calling early in the day helps.
